U.N. report on climate change is a ‘code red for humanity’

  • The world is warmer now than it has been in at least 125,000 years

  • These weather extremes we are seeing now (heatwaves, heavy rainfall, droughts) are getting more intense and more frequent - with science detailed in the report directly linking their increase to our Green House Gas emissions.

  • There is now more certainty about the fact that if we get to net zero CO2, its contribution to further warming is likely to stop.

  • Projections show that if we reduce emissions rapidly in the next 10 years, and get ot net zero CO2 globally around 2050, we still have a good change og limiting warming to 1.5c.

The world’s leading climate scientists today delivered their starkest warning yet about the deepening climate emergency, with some of the changes already set in motion thought to be “irreversible” for centuries to come.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said strong and sustained reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide are required urgently to limit the damage to the planet. It has shown that human influence has warmed the global climate system, with observed changes already impacting every region on the planet.

This is not a drill.” says Michael O’Hara, co-founder of Techies Go Green. “It’s more important than ever for everyone to play their part in the fight against climate change. Small actions of many can make the biggest difference.”

The U.N.’s climate panel warns that limiting global warming to close to 1.5 degrees Celsius or even 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels “will be beyond reach” in the next two decades without immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

In a positive note, the scientists underline strong and sustained reductions pursued immediately in emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases – notably methane – would limit climate change. The report shows human actions still have the potential to determine the future course of Earth’s climate.
